Siew Mai, Nasi Lemak and Char Siew Bao - The Breakfast of Champions

Tomorrow morning I have to run a short PD for the other teachers on my level in how to teach using this particular material. It seems ridiculously obvious how to do it in my mind but I've been asked to take this on seeing as how I wrote last term's final assessment based on this material. Sigh... I should be grateful for the opportunity as it speaks well of how I'm regarded and is good experience to boot. However I can't help but feel that if these people actually put in 5 minutes to think about it, which is about all I did, they would come up with a way to teach it effectively themselves. So I'm off to run PD. Whoever thought I'd be that guy?!

Through a series of links and SL having referred me to her previously I came across Xiaxue's blog today. Congrats to her first of all on becoming a minor celebrity and also being able to pay her bills based on her blog alone. Most of us could only dream of that, though certainly this is more a hobby for me than anything serious. What concerns me about Xiaxue's blog is that it is read by a LOT of teenagers. It would appear they're the only ones without the necessary critical thinking skills to see through her vapid postings. It was pointed out to me that this may be the teacher in me coming through. The "We have a responsibility to educate and not to influence the opinions of those in our charge yada yada" part of me.

Go have a read of her blog. For someone with a self-proclaimed IQ of 148 she herself revels in being shallow and without empathy. She is racist - read her reaction to a couple of ang moh ladies waiting for a cab (dec 21st or 23rd 06 posting?). I'm sure those women weren't saints themselves, but how could they possibly imagine that she was waiting for a taxi if she was sitting down at a bus stop talking on her phone???? And in response to suggestions that she is racist she responds that she has an ang moh boyfriend so she can't possibly be racist!!! Sigh... I can't believe I've let this tawdry skank rile me up so. She just reminds me of Paris Hilton.

Anyhow, the point of all this being that she pisses me off because she has a large readership that she then spews racist, shallow and uninformed opinions to - I dare you to check out her tv show on YouTube!). Granted she doesn't have a responsibility to anyone. It's not her fault her blog became popular. But the fact is it DOES have a large readership, many of them teenagers and she's filling their heads with nationalist dreck which she can barely support. That and she really does think she's beautiful. This is the most laughable element to me as anyone that has spent time in Japan knows, girls that look exactly like her are literally a dime a dozen on the streets of any Japanese city.

Sorry hon, you just ain't all that.

I'm suprised you made it passed the nose job diary! I scrolled further with hesitation. Although, the bit about the struggle between vanity and intellect was quite an amusing read.

I wouldn't be worried about the influence she may be exerting on her followers, it'll be the same demographic who has chosen vanity over intellect with Paris Hilton as their role model and a handful of horny middled aged geeks who marked her MENSA test.

It's all a façade that she thinks she's beautiful. To me she seems very insecure about her looks, hence the enhancements. It's a fact that at the end of the day, plastic women end up lonely has beens.

*cat scowl*

Sorry, but I ridicule shallowness.

Yup, me too. That's why I just had to write something about her. You should read today's entry, she takes tacky to exciting new levels! :)

After 24 hours thought i've actually decided I find her amusing. It's kind of like a car crash that you just can't turn away from. Imagine if she had an intelligent, sensitive child and the child saw this blog! Wouldn't take long to lose all respect for the woman that gave birth to you.
